While you were talking to yourself in the mirror at the beginning of January, explaining your justification for abandoning your New Year resolutions, the British men’s fashion industry was showing the world how it’s done.

On parade at London Collections Men, the biannual showcase for British designers, was a good look at what you’ll be wearing this autumn and winter.

In just a few short years, London has outstripped the traditional fashion epicentres of Milan (traditional) and New York (conservative) with its irresistible, inspiring and frequently mind-blowing mix of cool Savile Row tailoring, established quality brands such as Hackett, Dunhill and Paul Smith, impressive up-and-comers like Katie Eary and Casely-Hayford and the wild imaginings of St Martins graduates.

To celebrate the event, here’s a little preview of what you can start saving up for. Some of its forecasts (boxing knitwear and below-the-knee cardigans) may require a little courage, but these four trends will be bang-on by the time the clocks go back again.

So in it’s rarely out, the military trend reappears on the catwalks, this time adding tailoring to its sphere of influence.

Next year’s oversized collars, sheepskin jackets and autumnal colours will bring the decade streaming back.

Checks are going to be everywhere from trousers and suits to shirting. Mix with plains to avoid the head-to-toe look.
