Try as you might to stop them, kids will get muddy. So instead of fighting it, why not embrace it? And by embrace we don’t mean letting them jump in a puddle you happen to be passing, we mean actively seeking out opportunities to let them roll around like a pig in, well, you know. And one of the best opportunities to do that is by entering them in Lidl Mudder, the Tough Mudder event for five- to 12-year-olds.

The course keeps to the Tough Mudder ethos which encourages teamwork to conquer obstacles. For instance, one of the featured obstacles is a miniature version of the Everest obstacle where every runner needs to be hauled up to the summit. A laser maze and monkey rings are also included on the quarter-mile course, which runners will complete four times so there’s a chance to learn and master obstacles.

You’ll find Lidl Mudder courses at Tough Mudder Classic events, with advance tickets £10, rising to £20 on the day. However, Lidl is offering 800 family ticket bundles for half price. The package includes car parking, entry for two kids so you’re not forced to pick your favourite, and two adult spectator tickets. You’ll need to visit a Lidl and grab an in-store leaflet to get a discount code to use when buying tickets on the Tough Mudder website.

As well as being in the five-to-12 age range, kids need to be taller than 1.1m to take part and be accompanied by an adult or guardian with a spectator ticket.

The fun isn’t restricted to the course, either, with face painting, a mud mural, goody bags and a bike-powered blender for making smoothies.
