Superfood cocktail recipes

Though these cocktail recipes contain 'superfoods', we do have a responsibility to tell you that having them with alcohol may well negate their positive contributions to your health, or at least reduce them. Having said that, if you have a sweet tooth when it comes to alcohol, these cocktails are an infinitely better choice than WKD or any other sugary, E number laden alcopop. They are also perfect to offer your date. First time cooking for them at your house? Get your night off to a classy start with one of these 'healthy' cocktails.

Matcha Milkshake

25ml Belvedere vodka
125ml almond milk
15ml vanilla rice malt syrup 
3 wedges pineapple 
½ bar spoon matcha tea

Blend all the ingredients with a few ice cubes, then pour into glasses full of fresh ice.

Matcha is higher in antioxidants than acai, goji, or any other 'super' berry out there (except for maqui). The new darling of the health food word (move over Chia seeds, you're so 2014!) is bitter tasting dried green tea and supposed to be taken daily for the most benefit. This tasty cocktail ensures your get your daily fill, while using its bitter flavour to add depth to the cocktail's initial sweetness.

Matcha is also extremely high in the amino acid known as L-theanine, which is thought to help reverse some of the negative effects of stress. 

Piña Kale-Ada

35ml Belvedere vodka
75ml Pressed pineapple juice
5ml Cold-pressed kale juice
10ml Lemon juice
35ml Coconut water
5 Fresh basil leaves

Shake everything together in a cocktail shaker, strain and serve on ice. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a pineapple leaf.

Kale is rich in vitamins K and A, which are important for strong bones, vision, cell reproduction and fighting infections. It's also a good source of potassium, folate and magnesium, making it good for promoting heart health. Coconut water is great for hydration thanks to its naturally occurring electrolytes, which should help reduce your hangover.

Hail Mary

25ml Belvedere vodka
35ml Fresh cucumber juice
100ml Freshly blended tomato juice
10ml Worcestershire sauce
20ml Beetroot juice
2.5ml Apple cider vinegar
2 dashes of Green & Red Tabasco
Salt and pepper to taste
A pinch of paprika
10ml fresh lemon juice

Mix everything together in a cocktail shaker, strain and serve on ice. Garnish with a celery stalk, lemon, and cucumber slice.

Beetroot contain antioxidants and other healthy phytochemicals. It's also rich in a substance called betaine which reduces homocysteine levels (elevated levels are associated with a risk of cardiovascular disease), betaine may also aid digestion and improve your metabolism, while there has been a lot of research recently into its potential use as a natural anti-inflammatory.

Natural (undistilled) organic, raw apple cider vinegar has a high probiotic content and is naturally acidic. This helps promote hydrochloric acid production in the stomach, which can help alleviate indigestion or other stomach upsets. Plus, by improving digestion, it promotes healthy skin, inflammatory levels and metabolic function.
