Can You Complete The #StaircaseSnowdon Challenge Over The Bank Holiday?

With the UK expected to enjoy a sunny long weekend over Easter it will become even more frustrating to stick to the government guidelines to stay at home. However, stay at home you must, so rather than grousing about it let’s instead consider what you can do to make the most of your time.

The #StaircaseSnowdon challenge (opens in new tab) is a terrific place to start. It has been created by National Outdoor Centre Plas y Brenin to provide some motivation to keep moving over the bank holiday weekend, and it’s something that anyone who has access to a staircase can have a crack at.

To complete the challenge, you have to take 4,610 steps – the equivalent of hiking up Snowdon, which stands 1,085m tall and is the tallest mountain in the UK outside of the Scottish Highlands.

That’s not all that many steps, right? It’s less than half the standard 10,000 steps a day recommendation. However, when you’re plodding up and down a staircase it will feel like an awful lot more.

The challenge isn’t the strictest in terms of defining what steps count though, so if you don’t have access to a staircase we reckon logging 4,610 steps around your house is a good effort. And if you are on stairs it’s up to you whether you want to count the trips down as well.

“We wanted to bring the spirit of Snowdonia and the outdoors to homes all over the UK during this difficult period and what better way to do it than through an at-home challenge over the long weekend,” says Ruth Hall, chief executive at Plas y Brenin. “We know it’s tempting to get outdoors but we all have a shared responsibility to protect those around us and it’s more important than eve
r that people follow the guidelines and stay at home.”

If you take a photo during your challenge and share it on social media with the hashtag #StaircaseSnowdon, tagging in @plasybreninofficial, you’ll be in with a chance of winning a weekend away at the centre once the COVID-19 lockdown is lifted.
