Mountain boarding
West Sussex, England

To do this sport you need a board that looks like the love-child of a snowboard and a skateboard conceived on a drunken night out. But what it lacks in looks, it more than makes up for in thrills – strap in and you'll be spinning off jumps in a jiffy. One of UK's top mountain boarding spots is Haredown Mountain Boarding Centre in the South Downs, which has more than 20 acres of sprawling slopes to test riders of all abilities.

Surfing
Pease Bay, East Lothian, Scotland

For a surf experience far removed from the crowds of Newquay, head to Pease Bay on Scotland’s east coast. It's rarely packed, the waves are consistent and you're unlikely to encounter hordes of paralytic stag groups if you head out for a few beers once you've finished surfing.

Coasteering
Pembrokeshire, Wales

Jumping off cliffs into the sea, dodging seals and scrambling around rock faces – there are few sports more thrilling that coasteering. And there's nowhere better to try it than Wales's only coastal national park in Pembrokeshire, thanks to its abundance of caves, cliffs and crags.
