Back To The Future: What Would You Invent?

We saw some pretty bold tech predictions in Back To The Future Part II, in which Marty McFly travels forward in time to 21st October 2015. And it turns out some of them were spot on.

  • Marty got fired by video call. A crazy concept back in the 80s, yet today you’re now the weird one for not using Skype or Facetime.
  • “Voice-activated roll-up TVs? That would actually be pretty cool,” is what you definitely thought while watching the film. And here we are in the future with smart controlled wallpaper TV. Nice one Japan.
  • The film’s abundance of smartglasses was a fantasy reserved for the wildest technological dreams in 1985. In 2015 Google glasses have already been hyped up, arrived on the scene, and then unceremoniously ended up on the scrap heap.

And where they missed the mark, it was only by a small margin.

  • While we can’t pay a cab fare with our thumbprint, we can pay with a smart phone app. Cashless taxis – who’d have thought? Doc Brown apparently.
  • And with Nike not-so-ironically teasing the imminent release of its self-tying shoes, it would seem we’re well on the way to self-sizing clothes.
  • As for hoverboards, if you've got a spare $10,000 (£6,475), you can buy one today. But for the rest of us, it will probably be another few years until we are hover-commuting to work.

So here’s where London thinks technology will be 30 years from now – no prediction too abstract for us.
