There’s no better time to get into cycling than at the start of the British summer, when the pleasant temperatures and long days mean you’ll rarely have to ride in dark or wet conditions. And if you need any extra motivation to jump aboard your bike this June, you’ll find it in the many events surrounding Bike Week.

Bike Week runs from Saturday 8th to Sunday 16th June and is designed to get people thinking about cycling, talking about cycling and, most importantly of all, actually cycling. There are events all over the UK where you can ride with other people, chat about the benefits of cycling or get your bike fixed for free. You can search by proximity to your postcode on the Bike Week website, where you can also register to host an event yourself.

Alongside these events the Bike Week organisers have launched their #7DaysofCycling campaign on social media. This runs throughout June and encourages people to get out for seven rides of any length, posting on social media about their experience to remind people how great cycling is and encourage more people to enjoy it.

During Bike Week itself each day will highlight a different cycling experience. That starts on Sunday 9th June, when the social side of cycling will be the focus, whether it’s a long ride with your cycling club, or a short trip with a few mates to grab lunch together.

On Monday 10th it’s all about getting your kids to ride to school, or just getting them in the saddle. According to Cycling UK, the body behind Bike Week, around three-quarters of parents say being active makes five- to 11-year-olds feel happier and more sociable.

Come Tuesday the focus is on how cycling can benefit your mental health. Like all physical activity, cycling can help to clear the mind and relieve stress. Then, on Wednesday, the onus is put on businesses to be more cycle-friendly, which can benefit employers and employees alike.

On Thursday 13th June the spotlight switches to how cycling makes you physically fitter, while Friday is about encouraging people to make the switch to bikes for their everyday journeys.

Finally, on Saturday 15th, it’s all about your favourite short trips by bike. Every day millions of us make journeys that are 5km or less – perfect journeys for cycling. On Saturday people will be highlighting their favourite short bike rides, but it’s also the ideal chance to assess which of your regular journeys could easily be made by bike instead of by car or public transport.

You can find out more about the #7DaysofCycling campaign and Bike Week in general on the Cycling UK website.
