Given the restrictions on the trips outside you’re allowed to make during the COVID-19 lockdown, there is a chance that it has reawakened your love of cycling and you’re out riding every day for the first time in years.
If so, good luck to you. If not, however, and you have a bike sitting around doing nothing, then consider donating it to a key NHS worker so they can use it to get around during the lockdown.
You can do this through Brompton’s Brush Off Your Bike initiative, which is part of the company’s wider Wheels For Heroes campaign (opens in new tab). The latter has seen Brompton crowdfunding to build 1,000 bikes for NHS workers but the demand has exceeded what Brompton is able to cover, which is why the new Brush Off Your Bike scheme has been launched.

You can donate your bike, which should be in good condition – no wrecks you’re just trying to clear out – by listing it on the Splinster bike rental platform. You can find details of how to do this on the Wheels For Heroes website (opens in new tab), which also tells you what information you need to include in the listing to make sure it comes under the Brush Off Your Bike scheme.
Once the bike is up NHS workers who are verified by Splinster can rent it for $1 (Splinster is a US-based site but you can list bikes all over the UK to be rented via this scheme). You will be put in contact with the NHS worker to discuss the dates they can use the bike and arrange an appropriately-distanced collection or delivery.
If you’re at home wondering if there is anything you can do to help UK health workers, this scheme is a great way to get involved. So if you have an unused bike you could spare for a few months, head to the Wheels For Heroes site (opens in new tab) and get it listed.
